    1. does anyone know of any good books/interviews with bossa nova musicians. i still for the life of me can't reconcile the split between jobim's penchant for orchestral elevator-music style bossa w/ the tonal diff in gilberto & bonfa's acoustic jams. (getz & co are no surprise here)

like, obviously gilberto/bonfa/powell are skilled soloists, but jobim was no slouch on the piano or guitar either, but his discography is dominated by songs that sound absolutely nothing like this gem open.spotify.com/track/4A4HX3HrV0h8Wi0h5wclts

to be clear, i love the elevator sound (qv Wave, Ellis + Tom, Personalidade, the Composer of Desafinado Plays), but i find it such a puzzling shift and it's entirely marked by music that melts into an ambient texture in the way that is so emblematic of Muzak. i just don't get it.
