iamasq ok, so for mac, but you'll probably want a gamepad: i would look at celeste and an older game, hyper light drifter, both have polished Movement mechanics and despite being difficult, have a very forgiving skill ramp imo.

iamasq (there are other games in that "genre" like "dead cells" and "hollow knight", they are more punishing, metroidvania games, hard to recommend given your firewatch comment, though)

iamasq BUT, if you like strategy, i would definitely, recommend Into The Breach and of course Civ 6. A game that might really resonate with you though is Return of the Obra Dinn, a fascinating detective game. It's just surreal but really great concept and awesome execution.

iamasq Honestly, i think some of the best games recently have been console games: on the switch, Breath of the Wild is basically peerless. It is worth buying the console for imo. On the PS4: Edith Finch, Yakuza 0 and Spider-Man are fantastic and mostly story-driven

iamasq pretty recent, but sort of frustrating imo, The Witness is just a pure puzzle experience, i spent a lot of time playing it but it's hard to really recommend, it's more capital F Fun than, say, Steven's Sausage Roll, but not as fun as Into The Breach

iamasq if i step back and i look at you mentioning Firewatch, i think probably I'd recommend: something in the pentangle of Obra Dinn, Civ6, Into The Breach, The Witness, and Celeste. I'd say a Switch w/ breath of the wild is 💯 and a great console overall imo

iamasq lastly! if you crave state-of-the-art™, you probably want a ps4, most these are that: polygon.com/ps4/2018/10/12/17965856/ps4-best-games-playstation-4 in terms of gameplay, obra dinn and into the breach represent sort of extremes of good game/puzzle design. apex/fortnite are interesting, though, they're another axis.
