rsnous around 2004-2006, xml was very much used for structured data (see the flickr api) but people disliked that the popular toolchains that pushed yaks-worth of schema dev that weren't common-case useful (i.e. json wouldn't "fail validation" like xml docs might) (cf. nosql vs rdbms)
